How to build a luxury gift basket

A step-by-step method for custom gift baskets that look boutique-made — with eight themed ideas to get you started.

A custom gift basket lets you put more of your budget into the contents and less into a retailer's markup — and you can tailor every item. Follow these steps and it'll look like it came from a high-end boutique.

Step 1: Choose a theme

A theme is what separates a curated basket from a random collection. Pick one that reflects the recipient: Italian dinner night, spa evening, coffee morning, cocktail hour, new home, movie night.

Step 2: Pick one hero item

Spend 40–50% of your budget on a single standout piece — a bottle of good wine, a cashmere throw, a quality candle, a beautiful serving board. Everything else supports it.

Step 3: Add 4–6 supporting items

Vary shape, height and texture: something tall (a bottle), something flat (a chocolate bar), something soft (a linen napkin), something small and jewel-like (truffles).

Step 4: Choose a container they'll keep

  • A rigid gift box with a lid — the most modern look.
  • A woven basket or wooden crate — rustic and reusable.
  • A serving tray, salad bowl or tote — the container becomes part of the gift.

Step 5: Arrange like a pro

  1. Fill the bottom third with crinkle-cut paper or tissue so items sit high.
  2. Place the hero item at the back center.
  3. Arrange medium items around it, labels facing out.
  4. Tuck small items in front and in gaps.
  5. Make sure nothing moves when you gently tilt the basket.

Step 6: Finish and wrap

Wrap in clear cellophane gathered at the top with a wide satin ribbon, or simply close the lid of a box and tie it. Add a handwritten card and, for gourmet baskets, a small card describing each item.

What do you put in the bottom of a gift basket?

Crinkle-cut paper, tissue or a folded towel to raise items so they're visible and secure.
