How to wrap gifts like a luxury boutique

The materials, folds and ribbon techniques luxury stores use — so every gift you give looks like it came from a flagship boutique.

Presentation is a third of the VIP formula. A beautifully wrapped gift builds anticipation before it's even opened, and the techniques luxury boutiques use are surprisingly easy to learn.

The materials that make the difference

  • Heavy paper: matte or textured paper (80gsm+) folds crisply and doesn't tear. Solid colors look more upscale than busy prints.
  • Real ribbon: double-faced satin, grosgrain or silk ribbon, at least 1 inch wide. Skip curling ribbon.
  • Double-sided tape: the secret to invisible seams.
  • Tissue paper: to wrap the item inside the box.
  • A rigid box: wrapping a box always looks cleaner than wrapping an irregular object.
  • A bone folder (or the back of a spoon) for sharp creases.

Step-by-step: the boutique wrap

  1. Box it. Wrap the item in tissue and place it in a rigid box. Seal the tissue with a small sticker.
  2. Measure the paper. It should go around the box with a 2-inch overlap, and extend past each end by slightly more than half the box's height.
  3. Fold a clean edge. Fold the overlapping edge under by half an inch for a crisp, raw-edge-free seam.
  4. Use double-sided tape. Tape the seam from inside so no tape shows.
  5. Fold the ends. Push the sides in, crease the top flap down, then fold the bottom flap up — fold its edge under first and secure with hidden tape.
  6. Sharpen every edge. Run a bone folder or your thumbnail along all twelve edges.

Ribbon techniques

The classic cross

Run ribbon around the box lengthwise, twist at the center underneath, bring it around widthwise and tie a bow on top. Use a generous length — skimping makes bows look tight.

The diagonal corner wrap

Loop ribbon around one corner only and tie a bow at the side. Modern, elegant and uses less ribbon.

Perfect bow tails

Fold each tail in half lengthwise and cut at an angle from the fold toward the edge to create a neat swallowtail (dovetail) notch.

Luxury color palettes

  • Black paper with gold ribbon — timeless and dramatic.
  • Ivory paper with navy grosgrain — classic and refined.
  • Kraft paper with blush satin and a sprig of dried flowers — warm and organic.
  • Deep plum with champagne ribbon — rich and seasonal.

Finishing touches

  • A sprig of eucalyptus, dried lavender or a cinnamon stick under the ribbon.
  • A wax seal on the tissue or card envelope.
  • A heavyweight card in a matching envelope — see what to write in a gift card.
  • A gift tag with the recipient's name in calligraphy or neat handwriting.

Frequently asked questions

What wrapping paper do luxury stores use?

Most use heavy, solid-color matte or textured paper, often with a subtle logo, paired with satin or grosgrain ribbon and tissue inside a rigid box.

How do I hide tape when wrapping a gift?

Use double-sided tape on the inside of the paper's folded edge so it's invisible from the outside.
